What type of chocolate is best for fondue?

Everyone has their favorite kind of chocolate. Some swear by dark chocolate. For others, only milk chocolate will do. I have a friend who only eats white chocolate! (Does that even count?) The best chocolate is highly controversial!

The point is, you can use all types of chocolate, so use whatever chocolate you want. Milk chocolate is sweeter, and kids tend to like it better, so keep that in mind. I recommend using high-quality chocolate, whether that be chips or a chocolate bar.

You can also mix different types of chocolate together, like half milk chocolate and half semisweet chocolate. That will help cut down on the sweetness if you don’t like overly sweet chocolate.

If you like sweet chocolate for fondue but only have unsweetened on hand, you can use it and increase the sugar to 1 1/2 cups.

Do I need special equipment to make this Chocolate Fondue?

For this recipe, you will initially melt the chocolate mixture in a saucepan. You don’t even need a double boiler! You will need something to keep the fondue warm though or it will solidify. Chocolate fountains are great for presentation at a party, but a simple bowl warmer, slow cooker, or electric fondue pot will work great!

As for your dippers, you can certainly use forks! But if you want to get fancy, use special fondue forks made just for this purpose!

Chocolate Fondue is one of the easiest desserts to make! You only need a few simple ingredients:

  • Milk chocolate bars
  • Heavy cream
  • Granulated sugar
  • Butter, sliced
  • Salt
  • Orange liqueur or crème de cocoa (optional)

How to make Chocolate Fondue

Break chocolate bars into pieces and add them to a small saucepan. Melt them over low heat, stirring often. When they are fully melted, turn to medium heat and add the heavy whipping cream, sugar, butter, and salt.

Cook and stir for about five minutes or until the butter melts and the mixture thickens. Stir in the liqueur or cocoa flavoring if desired and bring the chocolate to a slight boil. Boil and stir for at least five minutes to evaporate some of the alcohol while keeping the flavor.

Transfer the mixture to a fondue pot or ceramic bowl to keep warm for serving. Serve this delicious fondue dip with your favorite fruit and other treats!

Chocolate Fondue Variations

You can add in all sorts of things for slightly different flavors. This recipe makes a great base for any of these variations:

  • Stir in smooth peanut butter and a little more cream for a Peanut Butter Cup Fondue.
  • Add marshmallow creme for a S’mores Fondue.
  • Add your favorite flavored syrups to change up the flavor. I like Salted Caramel, Hazelnut, and Cinnamon.

What can you dip into fondue?

Really, the question should be this: What CAN’T you dip into chocolate fondue? If it will hold up in a thick liquid, you can dip it. Here are some of my favorite dippers:

  • Angel food cake cubes
  • Pound cake cubes
  • Donut holes
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Banana slices
  • Apple slices
  • Strawberries
  • Pretzel rods
  • Marshmallows
  • Cookies (vanilla wafers, wafer cookies, biscotti, Pirouettes, Oreos, etc.)
  • Graham Crackers
  • Brownies

  • Dried Fruit
  • Potato Chips

Fondue Troubleshooting

If your chocolate isn’t smooth and creamy, don’t panic! As long as it’s not burnt, you might be able to save it.

Generally, if your fondue is thick and grainy, it just needs more warm liquid. Heat up a little more heavy cream, add it all at once, and stir to recover the chocolate. You could also add a little water.

Can you reuse the leftover chocolate?

What is this “leftover chocolate” of which you speak? Seriously, though, if for some reason you don’t finish off your chocolate fondue, you can save it for later by letting it cool, putting it into an airtight container, and refrigerating it for up to 2 weeks.

Then chocolate can be reused when properly reheated over low heat. Use it for another fondue night or try one of these fun ideas:

  • Thin it out with some milk and use it as an ice cream topping.
  • Use it to make candy molds. Add sprinkles, crushed nuts, or pretzels to make that candy extra yummy.
  • Dip bananas into it, then freeze them for chocolate-covered bananas! This can be done with individual slices or half/whole bananas!
  • Add leftover chocolate, reheated, to brownie batter for extra rich brownies!

Ingredients

  • 6 milk chocolate bars broken into pieces

  • In a small pot, add the chocolate and melt over low heat, stirring often. Increase the heat to medium and add the heavy whipping cream, sugar, butter, and salt. Cook and stir constantly for about 5 minutes or until the butter has melted and the mixture has thickened.
  • Stir in orange or cocoa flavoring and bring to a slight boil. Continue boiling and stirring for at least 5 minutes to evaporate some of the alcohol while keeping the flavor. Transfer the mixture to a fondue pot or ceramic bowl and keep warm.
  • Serve with angel food cake cubes, marshmallows, strawberries, pretzels, or any other foods of your choice.

Notes

  • The alcohol is optional but recommended for the best flavor. I used orange liqueur for that delicious chocolate and orange flavor.
  • While bringing the chocolate to a boil may evaporate a bit of the alcohol, some alcohol will still remain. If you’re worried about having alcohol, omit it completely.
  • While cooking, constantly stir the chocolate to avoid it from burning on the bottom.
  • The butter does not have to be softened beforehand, but it will melt more quickly if it is.
  • Nutritional content is only given for the chocolate fondue, not for anything used to dip into the chocolate.
